There were one or two moments I thought were enhanced by the 3D effect (once when I thought a mermaid's tail was flapping right in front of me), but otherwise I don't think the 3D effects are balanced out by the intensity lost in some of the lush tropical setting. Is it worth paying extra for 3D? We went to the 3D showing because the timing was better. On the other hand, Blackbeard is a bad, bad man very little or sensitive kids might take his casual cruelty to heart. And in contrast to some of the earlier pictures, this one has the least amount of supernatural goings-on that might frighten younger kids. Will younger kids like it? My teens and their friends enjoyed it. Moms will be happy to hear that Depp still looks pretty good in eyeliner and dreadlocks.īiggest gripe? The characters keep stopping and repeating the main plot points for the audience - I guess in case you had trouble understanding the sometimes rather thick British accents the first few times. And of course, my favorite scenery-chewer Geoffrey Rush (the pirate Barbossa, now a privateer for the Royal Navy) and the darling derelict Johnny Depp himself as Captain Jack Sparrow. What has this installment got going for it? A feisty Penelope Cruz, lovely mermaids, and a coolly evil Ian McShane as Blackbeard. There’s plenty of swashbuckling, and a few cool effects, but nothing that will seem as groundbreaking as the skeleton pirates or Davy Jones’ writhing tentacles. _ So, has the franchise finally run out of steam?_ While I don’t think too many fans will consider this go-round their favorite, it’s certainly an entertaining time in the spirit of the first three movies. Here are my thoughts on this latest entry, On Stranger Tides. It didn't take too much convincing: I loved the first movie, and found the sequels so far reasonably enjoyable as well. I unexpectedly found myself at a showing of the latest Pirates of the Caribbean adventure this weekend, after my kids and some friends made impromptu plans to head over to the mall to see it.
